Managed Learning Environments (MLEs)

It is important to understand the difference between a Learning Management System (LMS) and a Managed Learning Environment (MLE). An LMS is defined above and is also referred to as a Learning Platform or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

According to the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), 'managed learning environments' (MLEs) refer to the whole range of information systems and processes of a college or university including its learning platform / virtual learning environment (VLE) if it has one. These systems and processes all contribute directly, or indirectly, to learning and the management of learning.

Typically, an MLE could include any online registration process for learners, learner information systems, quality assurance processes and a VLE such as Moodle, WebCT, Blackboard or Learnwise. Learn more at the JISC website here...
